It's really important to feed your goldfish the right way!
Here's some information about feeding:
"Like most fish, goldfish are opportunistic feeders. When an excess of food is offered, they will produce more waste and feces, partly due to incomplete digestion of protein. Overfed fish can sometimes be recognized by feces trailing from their cloaca. Goldfish need only be fed as much food as they can consume in three to four minutes, and no more than twice a day. Extreme overfeeding can be fatal, typically by bursting of the intestines. This happens most often with selectively bred goldfish, which have a convoluted intestinal tract as opposed to a straight one in common goldfish. Novice fishkeepers who have newly purchased ruykin, fantail, oranda, lionhead or other "fancy" goldfish will need to watch their fish carefully for a few days, as it is important to know how much the goldfish will eat in a few minutes of time.
Special goldfish food has a lower protein and higher carbohydrate content. It is sold in two consistencies - flakes that float at the top of the aquarium, and pellets that sink slowly to the bottom." From Wikipedia.org

Love your blog and great information. I know when feeding goldfish another thing to be sure not to do is overfeed them. Not only can it be bad for goldfish health by eating too much of certain types of food it can also polute your water. Be sure to remove any uneaten food and also people should remember the more you feed your goldfish there will be more waste and more work involved with maintenance. Something most goldfish beginners often do is overfeed them which can be deadly.

Yes goldfish are a very dirty fish. They create a ton of fish waste. Overfeeding can be harmful indeed.
Another thing to mention about feeding goldfish is for people who have baby goldfish that may have just hatched. Feeding them the right kind of diet is very important in the early stages of development. A higher protein diet and a wide variety of different foods is also recommended not just for baby goldfish but for adult goldfish as well.
The tip you mentioned about only feeding what golfish can eat in 3-4 minutes is something all people should live by.
Great blog!
I have just adopted a goldfish and am surfing the Internet for information now. Your article of how to feed the goldfish was very helpful, as I realised that I definitely gave him too much to eat!
Yes the number one thing people do wrong is overfeeding their goldfish, koi or other types of fish in their pond. Feed what they can consume within 5 minutes max.
Your site will help many people. Overfeeding leads to many problems such as water quality, health issues, diseases etc..
